This path is for those who already have a fully recognized degree or equivalent qualification. Visa types of this pillar:
§18a: For those with vocational training.
§18b: For those with academic degrees.
§18g (EU Blue Card): The "gold standard" for high-income academics and IT specialists.
Don't have full recognition yet? This pillar values your practical history over paperwork. It’s ideal if your work experience doesn't perfectly match your original studies. The second pillar has been developed to address common issues related to recognition, such as non-linear work histories or missing documentation. Note: While formal recognition is not required upfront, you must still possess a state-accredited foreign vocational or academic qualification and at least two years of relevant work experience. Furthermore, a specific minimum salary threshold applies to these roles, unless the employer is bound by a collective agreement (Tarifvertrag).
§19c (2): Entry based on relevant work experience and a foreign professional qualification.
§16d 1-2: A visa category to continue training for full recognition.
§16d 3: The Recognition Partnership, a special type of visa that allows you to start working immediately while completing the recognition process in Germany.
This is for those who want to be "on the ground" in Germany to find their dream job.
§20a (The Opportunity Card / Chancenkarte):
Option 1: Direct entry if your qualification is already recognized.
Option 2: A points-based system (scoring 6+ points) based on your age, language skills, and previous experience.
Benefit: Stay in Germany for up to one year to secure a job.
With the Chancenkarte you are allowed to work 20 h per week while searching for fulltime position matching your actual skills and education.
